Scuderia Ferrari

Scuderia Ferrari races, mainly, in Formula One but has competed in many other series at a multitude of levels in motorsport.

Indeed the company was founded and was racing and building cars before the very first F1 season and before Grand Prix racing.

In recent years Ferrari has faced intense competition from Red Bull racing. Their last constructor’s title was in 2008 with a double (driver’s and constructor’s title) the year before (2007)

Origins

Scuderia Ferrari has a long and illustrious history in F1. It is the racing team division for Ferrari, the famous manufacturer based in Maranello, Italy.

The team was founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1929 and is named after him. Initially they raced cars produced by another manufacturer (Alfa Romeo) but by 1947, after the war, Ferrari had begun building their own sports cars.

It is the oldest surviving team in Grand Prix racing, being part of the competition since 1932.

With this pedigree it’s no wonder that it remains the most successful Formula One team in history with a record of 15 drivers’ championship and 16 constructors’ championships.

Famous drivers that have raced for Ferrari throughout the years include Jose Froilan Gonzalez, Alberto Ascari, Mike Hawthorn, Niki Lauda, Michael Schumacher, Eddie Irvine and Kimi Raikkonen.

Current Team

Ferrari’s current team includes technical chief Pat Fry and drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa.

Trivia

The prancing horse was the symbol on Italian World War I ace Francesco Baracca’s fighter plane. Ferrari adopted the logo after the fallen ace’s parents, firm friends with Enzo, asked Ferrari to honour their son’s legacy.

Whilst Ferrari automobiles are associated with luxury and wealth, it’s worth noting that Enzo and Scuderia Ferrari were first focused entirely on racing.

The 12-cylinder, 1.5 L Tipo 125 was the first road car to bear the Ferrari name and was built and sold to fund the Scuderia Ferrari.

Scuderia is Italian for a stable reserved for racing horses and is also commonly applied to Italian motor racing teams.
