Renault in Formula One

In 1981 Toleman Motorsport (founded by Ted Toleman and Alex Hawkridge) debuts in F1. They don’t do spectacularly this first season.

From ’82-’84 their form slowly improves. In ’83 they take ninth in the constructors’ championship. In 1984 they score their first podiums courtesy of Ayrton Senna. They move up 2 spots in the constructors’ championship.

In 1985 however, budget issues limit the team to a single car at most races. They fail to score any points and drop to 16th overall. Between the 1985 and 1986 seasons they’re bought out by sponsors Benetton and renamed ‘Benetton’.

They’re 6th, 5th and 3rd in the constructors’ championship in the 1986 – 1988 seasons respectively.

In 1989 Flavio Briatore is appointed commercial director. They finish 4th in the constructors’ championship.

In 1992 the legendary Michael Schumacher joins the team.  Schumacher gives the team an edge and wins for the first time in Belgium. They secure third place in the standings in ’92 and again in ’93. In 1994 Schumacher claims the drivers’ title.

In 1995 quick engines (courtesy of Renault) and Schumacher’s form secure them both titles.

In ’96 Schumacher leaves and they drop in form to third in the constructors’ title. The same result the year after sees Briatore ousted.

Average years follow. In 2000 Briatore returns and in 2002 the team is rebranded as Renault.

From 2002 – 2004 they emerge as challengers to the top teams once more. In 2005 they dominate the early season and go on to win both titles. Fernando Alonso is crowned youngest-ever champion. Renault is the first mainstream automaker to take constructors’ honours. The following seasons see mixed results

In 2009 there’s controversy around Flavio Briatore & Pat Symonds over a conspiracy to cause deliberate crash in ’08 Singapore race. They leave the team.

At the end of 2009, the Renault car company sells a 75% stake in the team to the Genii Capital investment company. At the end of 2010, Renault sells the remaining 25% share to Genii. Renault continues to supply engines for the F1 team. Genji enters into a branding partnership with Group Lotus.

In 2012 the team officially changes name from Renault to Lotus. The team achieved a race victory and fourth position in the Formula One Constructors’ World Championship in their first season under this new title.

Lotus in Formula One

There have been other F1 teams connected to Lotus through the years: the original Team Lotus (sister company to Lotus Cars) competed from 1954-1994.

The Lotus name returned to Formula One in 2010 in the form of Tony Fernandes’s Lotus Racing team, which used the name on licence from Group Lotus.

Group Lotus later terminated this licence, but Fernandes acquired the privately owned Team Lotus name and used it in the 2011 season.

For 2012, Team Lotus changed their name to Caterham F1 Team, clearing the way for the Lotus Renault GP team to be renamed as “Lotus F1 Team”.
